KIVA: The Dover MA Lending Team

KIVA is a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, KIVA lets individuals lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

We have formed a micro-financing team, making loans to people in the developing world in $25 amounts.  KIVA has a repayment rate of over 99% so the money you are lending will be reimbursed. You may then choose to invest again to help others create opportunities for themselves.

Many of you have already helped borrowers either by joining the "Dover Mass" lending team on KIVA.org, or by making KIVA donations through The Dover Church. The total of our contributions is already at almost $9,000. This represents hundreds of loans that helped small entrepreneurs get out of poverty.

Today, our team helped Jumbo from Zambia. Jumbo has been irrigating his small farm using buckets for the past three years. He is requesting a Kiva loan so that he can buy a water pump to help him irrigate his crops. He has gained a lot of farming knowledge through attending training workshops put on by the government and by local NGOs. Water pumps can be a major boost for farmers such as Jumbo, who struggle to irrigate their crops during the dry season. A water pump allows for farmers to water their crops more regularly, while also increasing the area they are able to cultivate.

Here are some of the individuals we have supported recently:

  • Floripe from the Philippines who used her loan to buy supplies and merchandise (shoes, clothes and cosmetics) for her store.
  • Edgar from the Philippines who used his loan to buy vaccines and feed for his pigs which he then sold for a profit.
  • Liberty, also from the Philippines, used her loan to buy groceries for resale at her mini-grocery.
  • Fikiri of The Don Bosco group from the Congo used a portion of the loan to invest in his farming projects and to buy a plot of land.
  • The Abriendo Surcos Group in Ecuador used their loan to purchase fabric to make seasonal clothing for sale.
  • Tufaa from Kenya used her loan to buy sugar, flour, cereals and other products for her retail shop.
  • Mercedes from Peru used her loan to purchase cloth, thread, elastic and other supplies for her clothing making business.
  • Nancy, a member of the La Ilusion De Cholchol Group in Chile used part of this loan to buy sheets, tablecloths and towels in Santiago which she then resold at her customers’ homes.
